In his loving care she had grown
Yet she was imprisoned by her brother own
Her happiest day had turned to hell
And distraught spread over, as if by a spell
In a single day, her world turned around
As from the sky, they heard a sound
Drowning in anger Kansa couldn’t stand still
As the voice said, him, her eighth child would kill
Into the prison, Devaki and her husband were thrown
And immediately, did Kansa ascend the throne
All her cries did her brother ignore
He no longer felt like the same person anymore
All seven of her kids, he had killed till date
Even on her enemies, she wouldn’t wish such a fate
Each child’s cries, burned in her ears
And her heart, did each of their memories pierce
And the eighth day after the full moon came
And she gave birth to a child, Krishna by name
He was to kill Kansa, the voice had said
Yet Kansa was ready to see him dead
Still mourning the seven, she picked up the eighth one
And upon the prison flames, she looked at her son
Krishna’s glowing face came into view
The face that was etched in perfect hue
The world mysteriously had fallen asleep
Hence a few moments with him, she could steal and keep
Her eyes took in all she ever could
For if not now, she may never would
All the stars seemed to shine on her face
And they seemed to shine over the entire space
Devaki wondered how many Yugas it took
For Brahma to make a child so pleasant to look
As if through her womb Vishnu himself came
Her child had no errors in him to blame
She wondered what good deeds she had done
For her to be blessed with such a son
The gruesome truth did she then see
The truth, away from which she can never flee
That her own brother was to kill her son
And she was to drown in sorrow, like for every other one
Salty streams had blurred her eyes
And her eyes turned as cloudy as the skies
The agony that spread burnt her heart
As she once again felt her soul tearing apart
She held her son and started to cry
In the gruesome despair, she questioned why
“O’ Krishna, why have you come to me?
Why did you come to a prison you can never flee?
In your face, I see all the gods as one
So why did you have to be my son?
Your eyes tell me that everything you know
Then to a better place, why did you not go?
O’ Krishna, why did you make me love you so?
If you knew the agony I must undergo
Seven kids to me, before you, were born
And seven times, by my brother, my heart was torn
Once more, my heart refuses to bear
I beg all gods that you, they spare
I beg all gods to save my heart
For once more, I cannot tear it apart”
Mysteriously, her shackles came undone
And her husband came, to take her son
“This child shall live” the gods had said
“And this child shall see the mighty Kansa dead
Maha Vishnu himself has come down to land
In the form of the child you hold in your hand
Hence this child shall live, with a purpose true
For he shall destroy Adharma and build the world anew”
The gods had heard Devaki’s cries
And hence was born a son, to destroy all vice
Her only flame of hope did Krishna ignite
And finally in this darkness, she could see some light
